Initiating an enquiry into fake encounters carried by Armed forces in Punjab during militancy days is a welcome step though a belated one. Though the scope of inquiry to be carried is not clear from news reports published today in various newspapers but it can be considered a serious move only if it attempts covers all cases of disappearance and fake killings. To start with the enquiry the Tiwari Commission report on the killing of Jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaonke (Former Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takhat) Sahib should be made public at the earliest so that truth comes into light. Help of Human Rights and other social organizations, especially of those who are keen to provide the help, should also be taken in the enquiry. It is good beginning but the probe should be got done by some Retired Judge or a Senior IPS Officer from state other than Punjab. As the Officers belonging to Punjab are connected with this episode in one way or the other. News reports regarding earlier DGP’s public confession that such strategy was a necessity of the time and even revealed that tens of such fake CATs are leading happy life and joined the main stream only after killing one innocent in place of each. |
