(Press Release of Sikh Students Federation)
Dated: 17 October, 2006
Five more Students affected by the decision of Punjabi University, Patiala to abolish the research work of M. Phil joined hunger strike at the main gate of the campus. This strike call is given by Sikh Students Federation. Jagmit Singh, Sarbvir Singh, Nirpesh Singh, Tejinder Singh and Nirmal Singh have completed their Masters in Religious studies and Comparative Studies in Religion. These students blamed administration for adversely affecting their academics carrier. These Students informed media persons that their final semester’s result was unduly delayed by University Administration. As the result was declared in first week of October, we had no option of taking admission in M. Phil in any other University as the dates of admissions expired before our result came. ‘This irresponsible act on behalf of ’versity administration may cost one academic year to us, without any fault on our part’ said Nirmal Singh. Meanwhile the University Administration circulated a notice to all the departments as well as hostels directing students to stay away from agitating students. SSF president S. Mandhir Singh said that in most of previous students’ agitations the administrating authorities blame that students were not willing to resolve the matter by amicable means or they were non-serious or want to create disturbance. This time we worked through proper-channel as we made representations to VC office, Dean Students Welfare office, Dean Academic Affairs and to the Governor of Punjab. But all failed to consider the matter or to find out any way to resolve the issue. It shows that it is the administration, which is non-serious and is not willing to solve the issue. He invited the administration to discuss the matter of closing of research work at any open platform, where the students are free to give their views.
